Mind/Body Connection: How Physical Exercise Improves Your Mental Health

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Exercise has always been recognized as an essential tool for maintaining physical fitness and improving overall health. However, more and more research is demonstrating the benefits of exercise for mental health. This essay will explore the impact of exercise on mental health and its benefits on depression, anxiety, stress, and cognition.

Depression

Depression is a common psychological disorder that has a significant impact on a person's overall well-being. Research has shown that exercise can be an effective treatment for depression. Aerobic exercises, such as running or cycling, have been found to be particularly effective in treating depression as it releases endorphins which are natural mood boosters.

A study conducted in 2016 showed that exercise is as effective as medication for people who suffer from depression. Exercising for thirty minutes three times a week can have a significant effect on an individual's mood and mental health.

Anxiety

Anxiety, like depression, is a common mental health disorder that can be debilitating for those who suffer from it. Anxiety can lead to panic attacks, phobias, and other mental health disorders. Exercise can be an effective treatment for anxiety.

A study published in 2013 found that exercise decreases anxiety by reducing the levels of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, which are responsible for triggering the fight-or-flight response in the body. Furthermore, engaging in exercise sessions can function as a distraction, meaning the individual is focusing their energy on exercise rather than worrying about their anxieties.

Stress

Stress is a natural response to the body's fight-or-flight mechanism. However, chronic stress is a concern and can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders. Exercise is effective in reducing stress levels as it releases endorphins which cause feelings of relaxation and even euphoria.

A study conducted in 2019 found that even moderate exercise could decrease stress levels in healthy individuals. Exercise such as yoga has been found to be particularly effective in reducing stress levels due to its meditative and relaxation elements.

Cognition

Cognition refers to a range of mental processes such as attention, memory, and executive function. Exercise has been found to have a positive impact on cognition. A study conducted in 2010 found that engaging in aerobic exercise three days a week for six months significantly improved cognitive performance in older adults with and without cognitive impairments.

Furthermore, exercise can increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) a protein that promotes the growth and survival of neurons. This can lead to an increase in synaptic plasticity, allowing for better adaptability to novel situations, and an increase in neurogenesis, the growth of new neurons.

Conclusion

In conclusion, exercise has numerous benefits for mental health. It has been found to be an effective treatment for depression, anxiety, and stress as well as having a positive impact on cognition. Exercise releases endorphins which are natural mood boosters and reduces the levels of stress hormones, which are responsible for triggering the fight-or-flight response in the body. Hence, it is highly recommended that individuals engage in physical activity as it promotes better physical and mental health.
